Dammit, Society, I'll Prove You Wrong!
August 14, 2003, 10:52 a.m. There’s currently a bunch of ads on the sides of buses for men’s clothing. One of them says “She says I lack commitment – I truly love this suit”. I hate that ad. I hate the message it sends – that men are unable to commit and are shallow and fickle. I hate the whole stereotype it reinforces. I don’t believe it’s true, that men, as a whole, can’t commit. I believe there are some men out there that can’t, but that’s their loss. If you treat someone like a child, they’ll behave like a child – if you tell someone repeatedly that they’re an awful, terrible person who’s going to screw up everything they touch, just by virtue of what sex they were born, what the hell do you think they’re going to do? Very few people fume quietly and say “Dammit, society, I’ll prove you wrong!” Most people just accept – after all, you’ve just told them it’s their very nature that holds them back, and what can they do about that? Yesterday night was my sister’s art show, for her HSC body of work. Because of a mix-up, I got there late, and missed her thanking me (the model) in her speech, but I did get there in time to be ushered into one of the art rooms and shown a banned video. It was banned because it had about 20 second of girls with their tops off and their faces exposed. Shocking! It still got marked, and was still being sent off to the Board of Studies, but it just wasn’t shown at the art show. It was actually a pretty hysterical piece, with ‘women’s mag rash’ and a ‘femme-artist’ named Noir, who was a total crack-up. I would love to see the outtakes – Noir’s actor seemed to really be getting into his role ; ) I better get going. I’ve got an English Language tutorial to get to, and then I’ve got to sit through a two hour lecture on Plato’s Phaedo. Which isn’t so bad; my Philosophy of Religion course is getting better – the wanker isn’t so wankery (although he did insist on quibbling whether putting people in mental hospitals was punishment or not) and in the last tute, we discussed death. I think my tutor is learning my name and doesn’t think I’m a total idiot, so it’s good : ) Alright, alright, I gotta go.
