I Promised Them Women

28 Days Later was . . . an odd little film. It went through all the clichés – zombies, feisty, independent survivors, crazy army Majors hell bent on building a utopia in the aftermath – but it did them remarkably well. Yes, it was scary, and yes, it was gorey and gruesome. But it never felt overdone, it felt real and like it had a place.

The most terrifying bit wasn’t a bang, but the anticipation of one that never actually came (to paraphrase Hitchcock). There was a scene in an underground tunnel, where you could see the fear and hear the oncoming threat and it was a desperate, frantic race to get away. That had me on the edge of my seat.

The most horrifying act wasn’t committed by one of the Infected, but one of the survivors. I covered my eyes and thought, “Sane humans more frightening than insane ones – well now that’s a new message.”

If this film had a message, it didn’t really get it across. It was cliché riddled, but I didn’t come away from it feeling cheated. This wasn’t a great film, it wasn’t a bad film, it wasn’t even an average film. It was an odd film. With a lot of blood.
