Take it Like a Woman
December 22, 2003, 11:26 p.m.

I don’t know why, but for some reason my sister seems incapable of behaving towards me in the manner of a normal human being. Even when we’re in public. Tonight I went out with her to a pub show, but left about a half hour in because I was sick of her behaviour. Also, my ride was leaving, but yeah, I was totally standing up for myself : )

When I turned up, she took one look at what I was wearing and sneered “It’s a pub, not a restaurant.” Okay, granted I was wearing a top that was a bit girly, but Jesus frickin Christ, if I want to dress up a little, what the hell is wrong with that? I felt good in it, and guess what, you don’t have to wear it! Grow up!

For the rest of the time, she was just being her usual, bratty self, making snide comments and slapping me down whenever she could. I don’t know. She treats me with this thinly-veiled contempt, and I seriously can’t tell if she really means it, or if she’s just behaving like that because she thinks it’s fun.

Whenever I’ve commented on it, she’s laughed it off and said she’s “toughening [me] up.” Yeah, right. Look, I can take gentle ribbing, I can laugh at myself. My friends poke fun at me, and I give as good as I get. But constant belittling is not in any way conducive to a healthy relationship or self-esteem.

You’re not “toughening me up”, you’re showing your complete lack of maturity.
