I Don't Like Spiders
December 26, 2003, 10:51 p.m. Last night I set my alarm for 7:30, so I could catch an 8:25am train – I had to be at the cinemas at about 8:45. Of course, when I woke up this morning and found it was eight thirty, I went into a panic. Thankfully, kept my head enough to call Eledhwen, get her to buy my ticket and caught the next bus in. So, I have seen Return of the King. My impression? I wanted more. It was epic, and wondrous, but really, I felt too many things were touched on too briefly. I was bitterly disappointed that there was no Faramir/Eowyn interaction. I wanted more character notes, and less panoramic battles. But I’m confident that it’ll be in the Extended Edition DVD. It better be : ) There was some great stuff though. I loved the hobbits. Frodo and Sam’s relationship was fantastic as ever, Merry and Pippin’s was great too. Shelob was popcorn-spillingly terrifying, and Eowyn was vociferously good (if that’s an acceptable phrase). When the last Star Wars came out, there were all these American ads for the tie-ins, and a lot of them showed shots of people inside the cinema, watching the movie, and cheering. That just doesn’t happen in Australian cinema, as far as I know. However, it did with RotK. And surprisingly, didn’t seem self-indulgent. When Eowyn lopped the head of the fell beast, we all erupted into cheers and claps. It happened at other times to, but I don’t remember them. Also, I’ve probably spoilt enough plot-points for you already. I think this is a movie that I will have to see a multiple of times to truly appreciate. Apparently this Sunday there’s a marathon of the Fellowship and Two Towers Extended Editions, and RotK. If I don’t have to work, I’m there : )
