Bunch of Savages in this Town
January 05, 2004, 9:35 p.m. Please, for the love of all that is good and decent in this world, when you are in a store, put things back where you found them. Just because there’s a sale on, just because there are a lot of people in the store, just because the service assistants are running around trying to satisfy everyone’s whims and desires, doesn’t mean that dumping stock you no longer want is helping anyone. If you seriously don’t know where you got something, try giving it back to one of the employees (we’re all really easy to spot in our blue shirts and name-tags), but don’t, good lord do not just put it wherever the hell you feel like it, especially if it’s five freaking centimetres away from it’s proper place! There is only really one phrase that sums up how you feel after working a shift during the Back-to-School sale – “run ragged”. Not only do I have to put up with screaming, whining kids, I have to put up with their stressed out parents too. Not to mention the fact that half the things in the catalogue aren’t out yet . . . nice work there, head office. But really, I don’t mind that much. Back-to-School is the time when I most get to work with the customers, and I prefer that to putting out stock. They come in, clutching their lists of required supplies, looking bewildered, and I walk them through it, find all their stuff. I guess I just love being needed and having people be thankful for my help. I am so selfish : )
