We've Got the Works
January 23, 2004, 10:56 a.m. I’m really not cut out for a five-day-a-week job. I’m working four five hour shifts this week, with one eight hour shift, and I can’t wait till next week when I’m only working four shifts (although one is on Friday night – I kill you Officeworks!). Ugh. Back-to-School sucks. And we’ve just recently had some mystery shoppers come in, and apparently they weren’t too impressed with our customer service. Which just annoys me. I mean, I pride myself on my customer service. It’s the one thing I’m really good at, at this job. I’m friendly, I’m knowledgeable, I’m helpful – I suggest things, I check things, I phone other stores, indeed other businesses to fulfill the customer’s needs. I routinely draw little maps showing how to get to our two closest stores. I had one lady ring up looking for sealing wax – we don’t have it, but I knew where she could get it so I told her. Okay, so sometimes I don’t walk you all the way to the scissors when you want to know where they are, and sometimes I don’t try to sell you staples when you come in looking for a stapler. But goddammit, if you need me to, I’ll go out on a limb for you, I’ll go that extra mile. And I always, always, wear my name badge. On a lighter note, though, I did get to make a cubby house out of an overly large cardboard box yesterday. It’s amazing how much your inner child can run rampant when equipped with a knife, a black marker and a box that used to hold rounds of bubble-wrap. So I guess work isn’t all bad.
