I Am God
March 29, 2004, 11:19 p.m. And here lies my predicament: I am god of a small universe that exists in my mind and on my computer. I can do whatever I want, decree whatever I want: I can say what is right, what is wrong, what always happens and what never happens. And it’s so hard to resist the temptation to make a utopia. Because utopias are boring. No society is perfect. But if you get to build one from the ground up, don’t you just want to correct all the things that have ever bugged you about the society you live in? I can have sanctioned gay marriages, women in the army, complete equality for all races and sexes. But that’s just all too easy, and it removes vital drama. Some of our best stories spring from the friction between our personal values and those belonging to the society we live in. I must resist! But I want you to love my characters as I do, and cannot bear to have you think badly of them . . . to accuse them of being complacent. I must keep reminding myself: it’s not a utopia, it’s not a utopia. But I hope it’s still a good story anyway : ) And here’s your chance to check it out: the second chapter is now ready – drop a line if you’d like to read and criticise. Don’t worry if you didn’t read the first chapter, it’s been changed substantially, so it’ll be included as well.
