But I Was Using My Whole Ass
April 20, 2004, 9:24 p.m. I had a presentation today. Totally pulled it out of my arse last night at 11pm. It was pretty obvious too – everyone else had cogent, thought out arguments and critics to back them up – “Thompson says this, but then McSweeney says that. I think a combination of this and that, based on the following interpretation of this passage.” I had: “Yeah, so I was reading this, and I was all, what is the poet going on about here, and I thought, maybe he means this. And then I thought, why is he doing that? And I was all, maybe it’s this.” But I did have a point no one else had, which was pretty impressive considering four people were giving talks on the same subject. Now I have to actually do some research, and write a proper essay. Tonight, as part of my Religion and Film class, I saw the first hour and a half of a film called The Message. You know how there are all these films about Jesus’ ministry? Well, this was about Mohammad’s ministry. But cause Muslims have a stricture against showing human representation, especially of the Prophet, Mohammad was never on screen. He was always off-camera, or actually the camera. Which was a weird shot, really. Because it’s basically putting the viewer in the role of Mohammad. And isn’t that more blasphemous than showing him?
