Can I Ask a Question?
April 27, 2004, 10:13 p.m.

To see what the hoo-ha is about, check here. These are posted in the order I got them.

Weds asks:

1) What is your earliest memory?
I was sitting at a little yellow table that my parents had bought me, having a tea party with my dolls (I was stuffing sultanas into a Cabbage Patch Doll whose mouth had a hole in which to put a dummy) when my mother, who was sitting on the couch, called me. She was pregnant with my sister at the time, and she got me to put my hand on her stomach, and feel the baby kicking.

2) What is your most prized possession?
My computer! My beloved computer, with all my writing, oh how I love thee! If anything happened to it, I would die.

3) What is the best piece of advice someone has given you?
When I was stressing out about my HSC, my best friend pointed out that a) I was going for an Arts degree, and didn't need that high a UAI [and I'm a smart chickie anyway] and b) the HSC is not the be-all and end-all of life. It put things into perspective for me. Academia is fun, but there's more to life.

Caraxus asks:

1) Most profound thought ever?
Um, jeez. That’s hard. (No, that’s not my most profound thought, get your mind out of the gutter.) I remember when I was about five or six wondering why I was me, and not someone else. All thoughts since then have swum in the shallower end of the pool : )

2) If you were trapped forever somewhere in the world where would you be?
Hmm . . . I’m assuming you want me to come up with the most likely place for me to be trapped, and that it isn’t supposed to be a good thing that I’m trapped there? Damn, there goes getting locked in Orlando Bloom’s hotel suite with him on the right side of the door. I’d probably get trapped in a boring receptionist job, doing nothing but filing, photocopying and faxing.

3) What makes you get up in the morning?
My alarm clock! Ba-doom-tish! Um, I’d have to say just being up and about and doing stuff motivates me. I find something in my day that I’m interested in doing, and I focus on that. If I’m going to uni, I’m learning something. If I’m going to work, I’m helping people. It’s all good.

Josquin asks:

1) What's the most interesting thing you've learnt this year at uni?
You know, it’s not a good sign that I had to think a while about this. I’d have to say, that in the early days of cinema, if you wanted a blood-and-sex movie, the first place you looked was the Bible. That was pretty interesting.

2) What's the best present anyone's given you?
See, a lot of the really good presents people have gotten me, have been things I asked for. But my definition of a ‘good present’ is something that’s unexpected, but still perfect. The occasion doesn’t have to be unexpected, just the actual present. I’d have to say Elf-boy’s gift of a map of Middle Earth, after I had been searching for one for months, was pretty goddamn special. Especially considering it was for no reason at all.

3) What do you really think of Elf-Boy Mark II ;)
Oh you’re an evil, evil man. Really, I think he’s dangerous. Because I know I’m about to fall badly, evilly in lust with him, and that’s not going to be good. Because if he doesn’t return the feeling, I’ll be heartbroken and pine. And if he does . . . ooh good lord, that won’t be pretty. He’s not called Elf-boy Mk II for nowt – he reminds me of the Elf-boy in everything he does and says. And I really don’t want to date him all over again. I mean sure, I had fun, and I loved the guy, but we really had very little in common except our attraction to each other.

Siffy asks:

1) When did you start growing your hair, and do you think you'll ever cut it?
In either year eight or year nine – I don’t remember, which is a shame. I don’t know if I will, but I do think about it. It doesn’t really suit my face shape, and it definitely needs some sort of style. I know people who know about this sort of stuff would tell me it needs to be short, but I’m afraid to cut it off. Like Kirsten Dunst laments in the Little Women movie, when Winona Ryder cuts off her hair, “Oh Jo, your one beauty . . .”

2) Do you ever dye your hair? [It's official. I'm obsessed with your hair :)]
I have never dyed my hair, although I have wanted to in the past, when it was shorter. Dying it now would be a bit of a logistical nightmare, as obviously one packet would not be enough, but how many would? And what damage would it do to my hair?

3) Do you enjoy cooking?
When I’m doing okay at it, yes. But usually I’m much too anxious about it, and I rush things, and it doesn’t turn out well and I get snippy and stressed and it’s not pleasant. I also find trying to figure out new things to do is a pain – I can live on repetition, but I have to cook for my whole family.

Becky asks:

1) What bands/singers/music did you grow up with?
The Beatles, Patsy Cline and Asleep At The Wheel. The Beatles you all know about, and I’m sure most of you have heard of Patsy. Asleep At The Wheel is a tribute band to Bob Wills, some guy who did a lot for a genre of music called Western Swing. It’s a combination of Western music (not country!) and Swing. It’s pretty much what you expect. These were the soundtracks of my childhood holidays, invariably long car rides to Canberra or down the south coast to Broulee.

2) Favourite music to listen to when needing to relax?
You know, I don’t really listen to music to relax. I go for a walk if I’m really stressed, but usually I read a book. If I do have music on, it gets ignored in favour of the book anyway.

3) If there were no obstacles whatsoever, where do you wish you were in your life right now?
Where in a physical sense, or in a more metaphorical sense? Physically, I’d love to be travelling around Europe with a few good friends (hey Mephit, can I crash at your place when we hit Oxford?) Metaphorically – I wish I was a little more dedicated to my uni work, and that I had someone to love.

I’ll soon hit your guestbooks with reply questions : )
