My Kryptonite
May 03, 2004, 9:19 p.m. Ah, poster sales. I thought this time, yes, this time, I would escape. I looked and I searched and I browsed, but I could not find one poster I really wanted. Oh sure, there were plenty of good ones, but I either already had them, didn’t identify with them enough, or they were portrait (and I needed landscape). Choosing a poster is an art form, trust me. But then, on a second trip with a friend, Circe called to me. I wanted to take her home, so very much, but she was very much not landscape, and I had nowhere to put her. Then, I discovered her mini-me, and snapped that up for $7. Brilliant! So now I have a small Circe beside my Mon Seul Desir poster, which is in turn beside my Chicago poster, above my Love and the Maiden poster and next to my Satine poster, all of which is on the same wall as my Audrey poster. It’s a wall of intriguing women. Hee, did you know Women’s Week was launched today? Squidgey was with me today. I think I’ve matured since this time last year. These types of celebrations are important – she and I have grown up in families where being a woman meant being a feminist. There was no question of our equality. But a lot of women haven’t, and this allows them a space to realise their own strengths. The only problem is when this space is created in opposition to men. But I don’t think it was today. And the fact is, we can celebrate our womanhood in this country, whereas in a lot of other countries you can’t, so we should.
