You Keep Using That Word.

So, this is a question for the more scholastically and theoretically minded of you out there – what does ‘trope’ actually mean? Because, from the context my tutors and lecturers use it in, I guessed it meant a character or situation that was used a lot and a bit cliché. Turns out it actually means a figure of speech. Now I’m confused. I keep checking Dictionary.com to see it the meaning has changed, but it hasn’t. So, is there some obscure literary definition of ‘trope’ that I’m missing out on by using Dictionary.com, or are my lecturers and tutors simply wrong?

I’m finding it increasingly hard to write entries. I’m not sure why. I guess this is just the slump that turns up in every diarist’s career. Everything that happens to me just seems to be surface stuff. I’m happy, I spend time with my friends, I go to uni, I work . . . but nothing really happens. Nothing worth writing about. But it’s not that bad, it’s not stifling or boring, it’s just . . . comfortable.

Blergh. It’s late.
