Get Your Homosexual Subtext Here!
May 17, 2004, 9:22 p.m. I finished The Count of Monte Cristo today. I have a question, for all those of you who’ve read it – what on earth was going on between Eugenie Danglars and Louise D’Armilly? Okay, so Eugenie gets dressed up in a guy’s clothing – understandable, cause she’s running away. But then Dumas adds that she does it “with a promptitude which indicated that this was not the first time she has amused herself by adopting the garb of the opposite sex.” Next, we have Louise and her ordering a room with two beds – but the next morning, they’re in the same bed. Also, at one point Eugenie stated that she loves “no one”. I can’t help but wonder if the original French didn’t actually say “no man”. Okay, perhaps I am reading too much subtext into this, but Dumas was a populist and lesbians are always popular. I liked the book – especially Maximilian’s line “Tell them – oh tell them, that corpse belongs to me!” What can I say, I’m a sucker for a distraught lover. But it did leave me kind of . . . cold and sad at the end. The revenge wasn’t really that satisfying. In the end, I couldn’t help but feel that Dumas had humanised his antagonists too much, made them petty, more than evil, that made me feel like revenge was just . . . unjustified. I think I want to cut my hair, really short. But I’m scared too. How daft is that, to be scared over some hair? I’m so attached to it – no pun intended. It’s kinda like a security blanket. It’s my glory and my covering. Perhaps, like grooming a dog, my family should sedate me and cut my hair : ) The oddest thing happened today. Elf-boy sent me an email. He apologised for being “pretty horrible and inconsiderate” to me. Which is nice, but not really necessary. I don’t really know what’s going to happen now, but for the meantime, we’re keeping it to email. The distance is a protective barrier. Let’s hope this doesn’t all blow up in my face : ) I’m sure you all have an opinion on this, and I welcome it, but I retain the right to ignore you completely : )
